Avatar: The Last Airbender is a two-player tabletop combat game adaptation of the titular television show on Nickelodeon. It was my final project for a Sophomore Game Mechanics class at DigiPen. Each player takes on one of the 6 main characters in the show - Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Zuko, or Azula - in a one-on-one showdown. Each character has a unique deck carefully designed to capture their bending element and fighting style.

As a Narrative Designer

  • Exercised media fidelity to the world, narrative, and characters of the IP in all aspects of the design.

  • Wrote flavor texts for each card to provide visualization of the abilities and make references to the show.

As a System Designer

  • Produced a comprehensive rulebook with accompanying images and diagrams to teach players the game.

  • Promoted mechanical counterplay of characters by emphasizing the unique strengths and weaknesses of each element, rock-paper-scissors-style.

As a Level Designer

  • Modeled top-down grid maps of two set locations from the show, each with a unique spatial look and feel.

  • Planned out specific excitement and tension points on the map to promote dynamic interactions between the characters and between the elements.

As a UI/UX Designer

  • Improved the usability and readability of components through multiple iterations on the graphic design.

  • Coordinated playtests to identify gameplay mechanics and usability issues, and improve player experience.
